The various forms of marriage, divorce laws and the special status of the Vestals in Roman society are discussed.

The reader is brought to life bright and contradictory personalities: the proud Cornelia Africana, mother of the Gracchi; the decisive Fulvia; the women around Julius Caesar and Augustus; the wives of Claudius; as well as the mighty Julia Domna, who holds power over Rome in her hands.
