This is the story of the origin of Pendergast – the eccentric FBI agent who shocks everyone with his unconventional methods.

In just six months, the life of Special Agent Dwight Chambers collapses. First he loses his partner, then his wife, who dies in a tragic accident. When he returns to work at the FBI field office in New Orleans, Chambers is horrified to discover he has been assigned to mentor a rookie agent, one Aloysius Pendergast. While Chambers tries to get back on his feet, his enigmatic and infuriating junior partner pulls a scandalous stunt that gets both of them suspended.

Pendergast happily accepts the punishment because it gives him the chance to investigate a strange murder in Mississippi that has caught his attention. Chambers reluctantly joins the investigation. They come across a series of terrifying, ritual-like murders that contradict every known profile of a serial killer. What starts as a whimsical search turns into a terrifying chase.

Thanks mainly to Pendergast's brilliant mind and unorthodox methods, the agents solve the case and find the killer... and then the real horrors begin.
