About 4.6 billion years ago, the Sun, Earth and the other cosmic bodies of the Solar System formed from clouds of gas and dust that swirled through space. Earth's conditions – toxic gases, harmful rays of the new Sun, strong storms, volcanoes and earthquakes – made life on our planet impossible, but the planet gradually began to cool and calm. Thus, about 3.5 billion years ago, the early forms of life appeared – microscopic, jelly-like specks in the sea. Living creatures remained small and simple in structure for another 2 billion years. But they changed the conditions in the air and water. About 1 billion years ago, this eventually allowed larger organisms to thrive and develop. Initially they were mostly plants that flourished thanks to solar energy. 540 million years ago a rapid 'explosion' in the animal kingdom took place. Creatures became larger and more complex, began to eat the new plants as well as each other. Changes have continued ever since, and life on the planet has not stopped adjusting to the relentless changes in the natural environment and atmosphere. With a new series of short encyclopedias, the publisher 'Trud The books are full-color, large format and hardcover.
